Obedient to Death
Let you in your life together, put thoughts and feelings that are also in Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, and the likeness of men .
And in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.
That is why God highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that “Jesus Christ is God” to the glory of God the Father! ( Philippians 2:5-11 )
Philippians teaches us how to have maximum joy is joy when it took off everything. That’s kenosis or self- emptying of Jesus did. Speaking of Kenosis or self-emptying of Jesus Philippians 2 then this is the “backbone” Kenosis doctrine.
Why did Jesus have to be willing to be obedient to death?
Talk about kenosis is talking about the willingness to relinquish the right. In the context of the Lord Jesus, emptying himself completely beyond human reason. God fullest actively take the form of a servant. Verbum caro factum est. And the Word Become flesh. Many people who consider the theory of self-emptying or kenosis as emptying into the Godhead of Christ. This is wrong!
Self-emptying or kenosis is not maintaining a right, namely the right to equality with God. Not that Christ did not become God, but God the rights that are temporarily excluded.
Important principle of kenosis is :
1. Bridging the gap between man and God is holy.
One phrase that is often debated is : ” Is it true that on the cross, God the Father God the Son left? “. Is the Triune God within themselves, there are two opposing wills? Is it true that Jesus Christ suffered separation from God the Father?
Clearly Jesus experienced loneliness : the angels witnessed the birth of Christ, serving Him was tested after 40 days – 40 nights, keeping the tomb of Jesus, etc. But on the hill of Golgotha, the angels were not visible, God’s voice is not heard even in broad daylight darkness rampant. God the Father did not abandon Jesus, what happens is obedience, not just obedient in carrying out his task, but even ” … obedient unto death … ” ( Phil 2:8 ).
Starting from Philippians 2:7, Jesus emptied Himself ( Yun, Eluton ekenpsen, making no effect what -owned ), and he became a man ( John 1:1 ), then take the form of a servant ( Philippians 2:9 ) and then he died even death on a cross between a robber – he equated with sinners.
Can we see the degradation of the status of Jesus Christ? As if more and more distant travel distance journey away from God the Father of Jesus, but Jesus was willing to do all that in search of sinful man. The distance farther when humans reject Jesus. Obedience of Jesus to die on the Cross a bridge, which overcome the distance between sinful man with a holy God. Jesus Christ has told us that his journey from heaven to seek sinners, had reached a point at the bottom, the least, and the least in that will not be done by anyone.
2. Fulfilling the demands of the consequences of sin
Why did Jesus Christ have to be willing to be obedient to death?
Since we were children even before they can read and know the law is written, God has put in our hearts instinct for justice. That’s why the self God also demands justice. This is an important rationale. Until here, are not we aware and possess the feeling that every sin and offense demanding justice in it? Is there any sin or transgression of justice in it without consequences?
For justice is God the Father ” allowed ” to Jesus on the cross, in order to fulfill the demands of justice for any offense that we have done. Jesus nailed on the cross not because of the power of Herod or Pilate, or even the high priest; everything that happens because of God’s judgment. In Isaiah 53:10 very clearly stated that God the Father has set out to crush him. It may be a sentence that we never fully understand. Father set to judge a child? Who could do it?
Only one thing that lets it happen : because of the nature and character of God’s law in the holy self and it is contrary to human evil and sin hurt God. This is a heavy trial.
Without Jesus became obedient unto death, even death on the cross will never feels no forgiveness for sin and human error. That’s why when Jesus cried out ” It is finished ! ” This is an expression of great victory and a great power because it is no longer a claim for unpaid human sin . Everything is already complete and perfect. Jesus Christ did not need to go up to the cross again, a time to savor forever continue the cross we can feel.
3. Ensure glory
Without death there would be no glory. It’s a paradox, but it contains the real truth. If the grain of wheat does not die, it will not produce another cereal grain. Have we thought and discussed this question : ” whether the robber to the right of the Lord Jesus was actually already repented and was saved? ” Whether that be an indication that he was already converted?
The first indication of repentance is :
_ He said the other robber : “we rightly punished, for we receive the same punishment? … But this guy did not do anything wrong” ( Luke 23:41 ). He really understands the concept of justice and punishment for an offense.
_ He said to Jesus : “Remember me when you come into your kingdom” ( Luke 23 : 42-43 ). Written on the cross: “This is the King of the Jews” and they turned out to insult Jesus, how could a king seems lost and helpless? The robber had a concept of the eschatological kingdom of God in nature. His faith far stepped up to the second coming of Jesus. That is why Jesus said: “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise”.
Through his obedience unto death, even death on a cross; Jesus was on the road to the eternal glory. Then the Lord Jesus Kenosis event be futile if there is no resurrection, Paul calls even if Christ has not been raised is futile our faith and we are still living in sin. The death of Christ on the Cross becomes a guarantee of salvation, His resurrection from the dead be motivated each of us to live in glory.
Dietrich Boenhoefer ( missionary in PD – 1 ) states that “The cheap grace is grace without the cross”. And in a book entitled “Agony of Jesus Christ” by John Piper.
At the end of the writing, there is a prayer that the raising of the Father in heaven. Among the fragment of his prayer, he said : “I pray that our attention is not diverted from the main purpose of the sufferings of Christ. Take care that we are not influenced by the questions that are not important like who killed your Son. We are all involved in it because of our sins”.
